There is no better measure of Chinese officialdom?s control-freakery than Prime Minister Wen Jiabao?s encounter with the press at the close of the annual meeting of the National People's Congress, China?s ersatz parliament.

This year?s performance, like last year, and the year before, was a grand set-piece event. Several hundred journalists gathered in a gaudily pillared reception room in the Great Hall of the People, photographers clicked madly whenever Mr. Wen made a photogenic gesture, and we all went through the motions of a press conference.
But if you thought the rubber-stamp National Press Club sessions were scripted, you should have been at the press event. Every question asked had been solicited, negotiated, and approved by Chinese officials. If you had not been through that process, there was no point in putting your hand up.
Chinese state-run media, whose reporters always get a chance to ask a question, can be trusted to serve up softballs. The official news agency Xinhua, for example, opened the proceedings today with a less-than-challenging request that Wen ?evaluate your work? since he took office nine years ago.
Foreign reporters generally make more of an effort to elicit something other than pabulum, but they can do so only if they play by the rules. And that means submitting questions in advance and negotiating their wording so as not to give offense.?
This can take several days of back and forth, and frankly I wonder whether it is worth it.
Foreign journalists asked Wen questions on sensitive topics such as when China would allow direct competitive elections to its national leadership, the recent spate of self-immolations by Tibetan monks, and China?s controversial refusal to back Western policies toward Syria.
But since the prime minister had seen the questions in advance, he and his aides had had plenty of time to formulate bland and unexceptional answers to all of them.
Luckily for us, though, at the end of the three-hour press conference at which the didactic Wen took an average of 13 minutes to answer a question, a cheeky Reuters correspondent ducked the rules. He asked the question that he had flagged in advance ? an anodyne inquiry about the level of local government debt ? and then snuck in a second question about a disgraced police chief who has sparked a scandal that has embroiled one of China?s most high-profile politicians, Bo Xilai.(?read more about that here)
Wen took the question, and he gave a newsworthy answer. It did not seem that hard, or painful for him. Why, we were left wondering, can he not do that all the time??

This is as a fascinating bit of minimalism as there has been in quite a long time, not only for its insights into the state of censorship in Iran(from what I can infer, Jafar Panahi's arrest sounds like something out of "Hawaii 5-0,") but for its symbolism in capturing a day in the life of Jafar Panahi, trapped inside waiting for loved ones to return on New Year's Day with fireworks going off just outside. So it may come as no surprise that the only identifiable movie on his DVD rack is "Buried" starring Ryan Reynolds.
In all honesty, I don't think 'This is Not a Film' was really meant to be a title in a conventional sense. Rather, it is meant to possibly to work around the Iranian authorities' sentencing Panahi to six years of prison and 20 years without directing, writing a film or giving interviews.(His lawyer thinks there is a chance he could have the prohibitions thrown out and his sentence reduced but he is still going to jail.) All of which he bares up under with humor and fatalism.
So, that only leaves him to talk about his old films in pointing out how little control he has had over his amateur casts in the past. To accentuate this, his pet iguana(which is bigger than most cars, by the way) takes center stage at times. So, he stages scenes from what would have been his latest film about a young woman who wants to attend university in Tehran over her traditional parents' wishes.
This all comes about when Mojtaba Mirtahmasb conceives of a behind the scenes series on banned directors.(Another way of looking at it, is as they put it, when hairdressers get bored, they do each others' hair.) Even though Panahi does not want to appeal to other Iranian directions which might get them in trouble also, Mirtahmasb also is currently in hot water, too. And finally, the real reason for this being made, is as Panahi puts it, to petition for international pressure, or in other words, us.

OTP or ITP, there?s a whole lot of dining out there to explore

The last time I summoned the sheer chutzpah to propose a list of metro Atlanta?s top 50
John Kessler is the AJC's chief dining critic
restaurants, the year was 2004. Back then many of the best restaurants were also the most ambitious ones. Scouting out the talented chefs who used top-tier ingredients meant going to a lot of places with tablecloths and ice-filled wine buckets.
That hierarchy has collapsed, and I have to say it makes this quest a lot more rewarding. Today you can eat great food in scores of casual joints, in bars where you shout over head-banger music, in revitalized neighborhoods throughout the metro area, in farmers markets and at food truck rallies.
All across Atlanta, I have witnessed the doctrine of manifest yumminess. (Find an ?Atlanta 50? restaurant near you with our interactive map.)
So how do you choose 50 from this bounty?
You eat and eat, and eat some more. But first you must decide what doesn?t belong.
I chose to stay away from restaurants outside the metro area (sorry, Athens) and restaurants that only serve late at night (like Octopus Bar) or on weekends (Quinones at Bacchanalia).
I avoided some very good places that suffer from inconsistency and others that are too similar to better spots nearby. I tried as best as I could to provide a variety of styles and cuisines.
I?m still looking for a French, Thai or Middle Eastern spot to merit a place on this list. I?m sorry to the worthy Italian and Japanese restaurants that were edged out.
I did not limit it to only those places that we?ve rated three stars and above but instead made room for two-star restaurants ? such as Roswell?s Table & Main and Lilburn?s Three Blind Mice ? that add so much to their communities and connect so well with their fans. It?s not an ITP or an OTP thing, it?s a looking-like-Atlanta thing.
Some restaurants that I had not previously rated, but have visited at least twice, now get a rating.
Two previously rated places got a bump. Atlanta?s Heirloom Market BBQ deserves three stars as a citywide destination for its inimitable fusion barbecue. Miller Union has grown into a defining restaurant for today?s Atlanta and it deserves a fourth star. (A guide to our star ratings and a list of the restaurants we?ve rated.)
No restaurant on this list lost a star. Yay!
I hope you enjoy this list and can use it as a guide when you travel throughout metro Atlanta. As you can see, there?s lots to explore.

CINCINNATIResearchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) have found evidence that, in addition to affecting the heart, brain and nervous system, bisphenol A (BPA), could affect a mammal's ability to reproduce by altering the structure of the uterus in ways that can progress to a potentially fatal infection.
These findings are published in March 9, 2012, advance online edition of the Journal of Reproductive Toxicology.
Infection and inflammation of the uterus, or pyometra, is most commonly seen in animals like dogs and cats but can also affect humans. It is a result of hormonal and structural changes in the uterus lining and can be deadly if left untreated.
BPA is an industrial chemical and environmental pollutant found in many hard plastic products.
"This condition can be caused by chronic exposure to estrogens; however, it is unknown whether estrogenic endocrine disruptors, like bisphenol A, can cause pyometra," says Scott Belcher, PhD, professor in the department of pharmacology and cell biophysics and principal investigator on the study. "We wanted to see if dietary exposures to BPA induced the condition in animal models of differing sensitivity to estrogens."
Researchers in this study exposed the models to different dietary doses of BPA in their food, ranging from four to more than 4,000 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day, or 17?-ethinyl estradiol (EE), a semi-synthetic steroidal estrogen, in doses of one to greater than 150 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day. A control group received no dose of BPA or EE.
"Using two different strains of mouse models, we monitored to see which doses of endocrine disruptors affected which strains," Belcher explains. "In a commonly used strain of mice, C57BL/6, pyometra occurred with 15 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day of EE and 33 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day of the BPA treatment groups."
He continues that at the effective concentration of BPA, immune cell numbers in the uteri of the C57BL/6 strain animals exposed were increased five-fold compared with control animals. In a different strain of mouse (CD1), a similar increase in immune cell numbers required 100 times greater exposure.
"These results suggest that BPA enhances the immune responsiveness of the uterus and that the heightened responsiveness in the C57BL/6 strain of females is related to increased susceptibility to pyometra," he says.
Belcher adds that the reason for this study was to compare appropriate concentrations of dietary estrogenic chemicals to allow reproductionnot to determine whether or not BPA had specific effects on reproduction or fertility.
"However, in the case where food consumption is altered and reproduction was completely blocked, some interesting and valuable insight to the impact of these dietary estrogens is possible," he says. "It seems likely that the immunologic and structural differences between the strains indicate a potential key difference in susceptibility to developing pyometra, which is related to the immune response. We are extremely interested in understanding why some strains or individuals are insensitive to the effects of endocrine disruptors, while others are resistant to the harmful actions of these chemicals.
"The results here suggest that pyometra in the C57BL/6 strain might serve as a sensitive endpoint for understanding the mechanisms responsible for the impact of estrogen and estrogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals on reproduction and also immunity. Further studies using the C57BL/6 strain might serve as a useful model of sensitive subpopulations at risk for developing immunological disorders related to exposures to estrogen disruptors like BPA."

United Online Inc. announced Monday that it will offer free wireless Internet service under its NetZero brand, the one that started the free dial-up phenomenon in 1998. The company is backing up the plan with TV, print and online advertisements.
There are plenty of catches with the free plan. United Online isn't offsetting its costs by making users look at advertising, as it did with its original offer of free dial-up Internet access. The "free" users will be money-losers for the company, United Online Chairman and CEO Mark Goldston said. That means United Online is using the free plan as a way to lure customers with the hope of upselling them to paying plans, which start at $9.95 per month.
To take advantage of the offer, consumers will need to buy a $50 antenna stick that plugs into a laptop, or a $100 "mobile hotspot" that allows any Wi-Fi equipped device to connect to the Internet. United Online will be selling the devices on the NetZero website.
The free accounts are limited to 200 megabytes of data per month? enough for some email and Web surfing, but little else. Half an hour of full-screen streamed video will eat up the whole month's allotment. By comparison, AT&T Inc.'s cheapest wireless data plan costs $14.95 per month for slightly more data ? 250 megabytes per month ? but that plan is only available for tablets with built-in cellular modems.
When the monthly traffic allotment is exhausted, NetZero cuts off Internet access until the start of the next month, and users are prompted to upgrade to the paid plan.
NetZero will only let users ride free for a year. If they switch to a paid plan, they won't be able switch back to the free one.
The $9.95 plan will provide 500 megabytes of traffic for a month. For $50 per month, subscribers get 4 gigabytes of data per month. That's enough for some video watching, but not enough to replace a household's cable or DSL modem. A Verizon Wireless plan that's contract-free, like NetZero's, provides 1 gigabyte for the same price.
United Online doesn't have a wireless broadband network of its own. Instead, it's renting capacity on Clearwire Corp.'s network. It's the same network used by Sprint Nextel Corp. to provide "Sprint 4G" data service. Several cable companies, including Comcast Corp., also resold access to Clearwire's network under their own brand. However, they've pulled out of that deal to focus on a partnership with Verizon Wireless.
Clearwire's network has a few problems: it's based on a broadband technology that the rest of the industry has bypassed, which means the selection of compatible devices is limited. Because of the frequency it uses, the signal has difficulty penetrating into buildings. Both Sprint and the cable companies used Sprint's slower cellular data network as a fallback option, but NetZero's devices rely only on Clearwire, which means coverage at decent signal strength may be spotty.
Clearwire has stopped investing in this network and is instead raising money for a new network that uses the industry-standard "LTE" technology.
According to Clearwire's financial statements, it received an average of $6.34 per month in the fourth quarter for each wholesale subscriber, most of whom are "Sprint 4G" smartphone users.
United Online, which is based in Woodland Hills, Calif., has about 750,000 dial-up subscribers left, Goldston said. Internet service is a minor part of its overall business: it makes more from owning flower-delivery service FTD and "online nostalgia services" like Classmates.com.

I?m a gamer, and by that I mean I play videogames, a lot. In the 2003 Knights of the Old Republic, Bioware originally intended to include a lesbian character, but after some disagreement with LucasArts (who held the license for the game), the character became bisexual. Even so, it was a breakthrough in the gaming industry and the trend would be continued in every major Bioware game since. The way Bioware treated same-sex relationships was good too, characters reacted no differently than they did with the opposite-sex. However, this seems to have changed in Bioware?s flagship series, Mass Effect.
Mass Effect 1 notably has no male same-sex options, and the female same-sex option is technically of an all-female alien race, so it?s not technically a lesbian relationship. Mass Effect 2 comes packaged with disabled scenes that make it clear that same-sex relationships had been on the table, enough that some of the scenes had been fully made and voice acted. It?s interesting that Bioware has chosen to forego what they?ve included in every other game they?ve made.
We should consider Bioware?s current position. In less than a decade, they?ve gone from a relatively unknown developer to one of the world?s leading videogame brands. What once went under the radar now gets to be blasted on Fox News and a ?Family Values? group. They responded by mostly removing the offending content.

First, Mass Effect 2 is not a PG-13 action movie, it?s rated M and requires an ID to purchase. Even more importantly, a player can initiate romances with opposite-sex characters, but this apparently stays in the PG-13 category? Instead, same-sex romances by nature of existing automatically enter R rated territory?
Now let?s talk about Mass Effect 3. It just came out on March 6th and I haven?t gotten a chance to play it. But already, I?m seeing comments pop up all around the internet. Here?s one of the tamer ones from Metacritic, ?Bioware figured let?s make the hero homosexual now in stark contrast to the first 2 games where he was normal.? In Mass Effect 3, there are new two romance options: one is a strictly gay option and the other strictly lesbian. (Just a reminder that they are options.) Almost immediately upon release, the internet was flooded with people who said they hated the game and that it ?forced them to be gay?. Since I?ve never played the game, I searched around online and found an article titled, ?How Hard is it Not to be Gay in Mass Effect 3?? on Forbes. Paul Tassi writes, ?Conversations with Cortez [the gay character] take up about five minutes of the game so far, and homosexuality has come up for maybe ten seconds. Mass Effect teaches you to treat gays?like people. Cortez?s story of loss is quite sad, and there?s no reason you can?t console him without either of you taking your pants off.?
Still, many angry gamers don?t seem to accept the very existence of the gay storyline. Kevin Vanord, a senior editor at GameSpot describes the anti-gay perspective, ?No matter that you can simply choose not to pursue that road if you don?t wish to. To this gamer, the answer is simple: Bioware must cater to him, and to him alone. It?s bad enough that the real world has to include homosexuals, but his games, too? Preposterous. Disgusting. Liberal. It?s the gay agenda at work, soiling the heteronormative power fantasy he?s been able to have up to this point.?
Greg Zeschuk, Bioware co-founder finds it surprising that having a gay option creates this much drama. ?It?s surprising that people think it?s that big a deal,? Greg Zeschuk said. ?If you?re creating this kind of content, it?s very natural to provide all the options.? Bioware is not an activist or progressive company; it simply sees the gay storyline as a realistic option to add into a role-playing game.
So in the end, all this controversy boils down to some more homophobia. It?s really sad that a simple five-minute romance storyline churns out this much spite, but it?s also a warning. Our fight isn?t over. As long as entire communities continue to hate even the existence of ours, we cannot become complacent. To Bioware, I applaud you for redeeming yourself in the eyes of gay gamers and giving much needed visibility to LGBT people, especially in the completely natural and unexceptional treatment they give the gay romance arcs. The videogame industry needs more portrayals of gay characters like those in Mass Effect, where a gay character is just as regular as a straight character, and no one is any more exceptional. Only through building this visibility can we eventually come to a point where being gay can be perceived by everyone, to be as normal as being straight.
